The Kingdom of Toro is mourning the loss of its youthful monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who has died at the age of 34.
The King’s death was announced on Thursday, August 27, sending shockwaves through the kingdom and across Uganda.
According to a statement from the office of the Kingdom’s Prime Minister, King Oyo died at approximately 10pm.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Toro,” the statement read, describing his death as an “immeasurable loss” to the Royal Family, the people of Toro and Uganda.
The kingdom has called for calm, unity and prayer as it begins the mourning process.
While details surrounding the King’s final days remain closely guarded, sources close to the kingdom said Oyo had been receiving treatment for cancer at a hospital in the United States in recent weeks.
The reports come weeks after the kingdom announced that the monarch had travelled abroad for “official engagements and to further his studies”, following speculation about his health.
Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo ascended the Toro throne as a child following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His mother is Omugo Best Kemigisa, the Queen Mother of Toro.
His reign, which began when he was just three years old, made him one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs at the time. For more than three decades, Oyo grew from a child king into a prominent cultural figure and custodian of Toro’s royal heritage.
His death now marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the kingdom’s modern history.
The royal household has also confirmed that the succession of the Toro crown will continue. According to the Prime Minister’s statement, Oyo leaves behind a Prince who will be his heir, although his identity will be formally revealed at an appropriate time in accordance with Toro traditions and customs.
The loss comes only days after the death of Oyo’s cousin, Beth Abwooli, who also reportedly died of cancer.
Oyo’s reign was not without controversy. In 2015, his cousin David Kijanangoma, a grandson of former King George Rukidi III, dramatically claimed to have overthrown him, arguing that the young monarch was not sufficiently present in Toro. The attempted challenge, however, did not alter Oyo’s position on the throne.
For now, Toro turns its attention to mourning a King who spent virtually his entire life under the weight, tradition and privilege of the crown.
