The final putt may have brought the competition to an end, but at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa in Kigo, the evening was only beginning.
After a day on the course for the inaugural Captain’s Putter, golfers and guests moved to the Marina Club House, where the atmosphere shifted from competition to conversation for an evening hosted under the Johnnie Walker Blue Club.
Hosted by Jimmy Mugerwa, Chairman of Uganda Breweries Limited and Captain of Serena Golf Club, the gathering brought together golf, whisky, music and social connection in a setting designed to celebrate what happens after the scorecards are put away.
For Mugerwa, the tournament was never solely about the competition.
“The tournament is as much about bringing people together as it is about competition,” he said, highlighting golf's ability to create relationships and give people space to enjoy each other's company away from the demands of work.
That philosophy continued into the evening.
At the Blue Club gathering, guests settled into conversations over food and whisky, while the Johnnie Walker team introduced them to the more deliberate ritual of whisky appreciation.
Steven Baguma, Reserve Brand Ambassador, guided guests through the experience, encouraging them to engage their senses before taking a sip — observing the whisky, exploring its aroma, tasting it slowly and paying attention to the flavours and finish.
The exercise offered a reminder that premium whisky can be as much about the ritual and company surrounding the glass as it is about the drink itself.
For Christine Kyokunda, Johnnie Walker East Africa Brand Manager, the inaugural event was an opportunity to celebrate both golf and the relationships created around it.
“We are proud to be part of the inaugural Captain’s Putter and to celebrate a captain who continues to bring people together beyond golf,” Kyokunda said.
“This is more than just a tournament. It is about the people, the conversations, the relationships and the experiences that happen around the game.”
Music eventually took over from golf as the evening's main soundtrack.
Myko Ouma and his band delivered the first major live performance, bringing instrumentation and familiar songs into the lakeside setting.
Later, Elijah Kitaka took over, carrying the evening further into celebration as guests sang along, relaxed and continued their conversations.
There was also a natural connection between the sport and the brand's philosophy.
Golf demands patience, precision and a willingness to keep moving towards the next shot. Johnnie Walker's long-standing “Keep Walking” message similarly centres on progression and movement.
By the end of the evening, however, nobody appeared to be in a hurry.
The clubs had been put away, the scorecards had done their job and the competition was over.
