Between Beats and Growth: The Making of Dreventy, Uganda’s Rising Voice

Since his debut EP Blue Detail in 2022, Dreventy has quietly evolved into one of Uganda’s most intentional voices in contemporary music. Reflecting on his journey, he admits that his craft has matured. While he once sang mostly for himself, he now writes with the audience in mind, crafting music that’s catchy, simple, and meaningful; talk of being intentional and growth.

Offstage, Dreventy is a grounded, fun-loving individual. A die-hard Manchester United fan, a gamer, and an avid reader, he believes life’s experiences feed his creativity. His early childhood development days were characterised by interactions with CDs and tapes of Madonna, Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias and Westlife. While keeping himself company as his parents went to work, Dreventy developed an early love for storytelling through music. His first-ever studio song, “I Won’t Forget”, recorded impulsively during his high school break for UGX 60,000, sparked the path he now pursues with purpose and focus.

Central to his growth has been his close circle and team. In times of self-doubt and when quitting seemed an easier option, their support kept him pushing forward. Dreventy maintains a private life and a small circle, wanting to be known for his music rather than controversy. “Music is where my heart is at, and if I’m to be remembered for anything, let it be that   I was the dude who loved his music and creating it for the people who matter the most: my listeners,” he echoed during my one-on-one interview with him.

Dreventy

Artistically, Dreventy has embraced evolution. While Blue Detail was pop and R&B-heavy, he has since explored Afrobeats and other sounds, refusing to be boxed into one genre. Pop comes naturally to him, but other genres require effort and discipline, a challenge he welcomes.

Dreventy is an emotional writer

Emotion drives his songwriting. Whether from experience, observation, or imagination, his music tells stories of love, heartbreak, loss, and now, empathy for others. He collaborates closely with producers, perfecting each track until his team and he are in sync, which results in creating tracks they are proud of.

Dreventy draws inspiration from artists like Chris Brown, Doja Cat, Zayn Malik, Trey Songz, and Christina Perry and Uganda’s own Allan Toniks.  At the moment, he is listening to a lot of Asa, Sabrina Carpenter, ASAP Rocky, Dolly Parton and Davido.  He says he greatly admires each of these acts for their versatility and genre mastery. Currently,

He has most recently released a new EDM single, “9th October”. One could think or guess the song to be about Uganda’s Independence Day, but it is a love song, except that it was inspired by a day that was characterised by laughter, goat ribs, ice cream, a walk and chills with his 2 friends back then in 2019. This happened on 9th October in 2019, and so to mark the day, he wrote a song to mark the good day it was.

Intentionality is central to his creative process. Early in his career, listeners sometimes questioned whether a song was about love or inspiration, but today he writes with clarity, aiming for emotional resonance above all else. Gratitude drives him; knowing someone feels something when listening is his ultimate reward.

A Big Dreamer

On stage, Dreventy adapts to each song, calm and soulful for ballads, vibrant and energetic for dance tracks, showcasing his versatility. When asked about dream stages he wishes to perform on someday, Dreventy enthusiastically mentions Madison Square Garden, the Royal Albert Hall, and  Coachella. “Or even Blankets and Wine or even the Super Bowl. I mean, why not?”, for I believe where there’s a will, there’s a way”, he stresses.

Even in rapid-fire answers, his personality shines: he prefers writing songs and recording in the night, dreams of collaborating with Allan Toniks, and enjoys Ugandan food like Kaloplus Gonja as he famously sang in his 2023 song “Ma Way”. Humorous yet thoughtful, Dreventy balances the life of an evolving artist with the grounded humanity that defines him.

From Blue Detail to his new single “9th October”, Dreventy’s journey is one of growth, authenticity, and emotional connection. His music speaks, and in his own words, he’s only just getting started.
