Uganda’s Female DJs Are Redefining the Beat of Nightlife

Something exciting is happening in Uganda’s nightlife. The sound is shifting. The vibe is changing. And at the heart of it all? Women. Specifically, Uganda’s female DJs—a bold wave of talent breaking boundaries, commanding dance floors, and reshaping the party scene.

Not long ago, seeing a woman behind the decks was rare. DJing was a male-dominated space. Women were mostly in the crowd, not leading it. That’s changing fast. Today, if you walk into a club in Kampala or hit a beach party in Entebbe, chances are high that a woman is setting the tone. And she’s not just playing music—she’s curating an experience.

Take Etania Mutoni, for example. Dubbed The Life of the Party, her sets are a show of style, energy, and charisma. She doesn’t just DJ—she performs. Then there are media personalities like Lyndah Ddane and Sheila Gashumba, now crafting soundscapes that blend global beats with local flavour. Their influence goes beyond music, connecting deeply with a generation that celebrates both sound and style.

DJ Scata keeps crowds moving with polished afrobeat and dancehall. Another is DJ Zato brings Afro-tech to underground spaces. DJ Kathy hosts all-female DJ nights, shining a spotlight on sisterhood and sound.

New voices like DJ Wolfie, City Girl, and DJ Ames from Ssese Nation are gaining momentum. Their genre-blending sets, digital edge, and fresh energy speak directly to the next generation of partygoers.

Of course, this movement wouldn’t be possible without DJs who’ve held it down for years and shaped Uganda’s nightlife scene.
Sal Deejay, a household name, has delivered unforgettable sets and helped define the club culture across the country.
Others include Kampire, DJ Rachael, Xyzl, Kathy, Mary Jo, Karo, and DJ Lolah—trailblazers inspiring more women behind decks.

But this movement isn’t just about beats. It’s about visibility, creativity, and cultural change. These women are challenging stereotypes, owning their space, and building brands that stretch into fashion, lifestyle, content, and influence. There’s something personal in their presence. Their sets feel curated and emotionally tuned to the crowd.

Whether it’s Etania hyping a Friday night or Wolfie introducing a new vibe, Uganda’s female DJs are telling stories with every drop. With support from mentorships, brand deals, and platforms like All Events Kampala, the scene is only growing.

So the next time you step onto a dance floor, take a look behind the booth. Chances are, it’s a woman redefining the rhythm—and she’s just getting started.
